Intelligence
TL;DR Intelligence is the ability to learn, reason, solve problems, and adapt to new situations, whether in humans, animals, or machines.
Paul Dirac by Midjourney
Intelligence is a broad and deeply studied concept that spans psychology, biology, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. Rather than a single agreed-upon definition, intelligence is typically described as a set of abilities, including learning from experience, reasoning abstractly, solving problems, and adapting behavior to changing environments. In the context of AI, intelligence refers to a system's ability to perform tasks that typically require human cognitive effort, though it differs fundamentally from human intelligence.
In everyday terms, intelligence is about understanding, making sound decisions, and adapting when situations change. People show intelligence when they learn new skills, solve puzzles, communicate ideas, or handle unfamiliar problems. Animals also display intelligence in various ways, such as navigating their environments or cooperating. When we talk about machine intelligence, it usually means the machine can perform specific tasks well, such as recognizing faces, understanding speech, or playing games, even though it does not truly understand the world as humans do.
From a technical perspective, intelligence is often defined as an agent's capacity to achieve goals across a range of environments. In AI research, this includes abilities such as perception, reasoning, planning, learning, and decision-making under uncertainty. Intelligence may be measured through task performance, generalization ability, adaptability, and efficiency. Modern AI systems typically exhibit narrow intelligence, excelling in well-defined domains using statistical learning, optimization, and representation learning, rather than possessing general or human-like intelligence.
