Jacq Vaucan (Antonio Banderas) is an insurance investigator for ROC Robotics Corporation, the company that builds the Pilgrim 7000 units. His job is to find malfunctioning or illegally modified robots.
He is called to investigate a Pilgrim that appears to have been altering itself, which should be impossible due to built-in safeguards. As Jacq digs deeper, he discovers a small group of robots that appear to be learning, evolving and operating outside their original programming.
