Algorithm

Cool image visualising an algorithm.

In computer science, an algorithm is a set of instructions for solving a problem. It is a step-by-step guide that can be followed by a computer to perform a task. Algorithms are created by programmers to solve specific problems. For example, there is an algorithm for sorting a list of numbers into ascending order. Once an algorithm has been created, it can be used over and over again to solve the same problem. There are many different types of algorithms, and they can be coded in any programming language. Some common algorithms include search algorithms, sorting algorithms, and data compression algorithms. Algorithms are an essential part of computing, and they will continue to play a vital role in the future of computing.

ELI5: Explan algorithm like I’m 5 years old

An algorithm is like a recipe for your favorite cookies. Just like a recipe, an algorithm is a set of step-by-step instructions that tells you how to do something.

For the cookies, the recipe might say:

  1. Gather all your ingredients: flour, sugar, eggs, and chocolate chips.

  2. Mix the flour and sugar together.

  3. Beat in the eggs.

  4. Stir in the chocolate chips.

  5. Scoop the dough onto a baking sheet.

  6. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

Just like you follow the recipe to make cookies, a computer follows an algorithm to do a task. The algorithm tells the computer exactly what steps to take, in what order, to get the job done.

So, an algorithm is like a recipe, but for a computer!
